Blue Mare sculpture on ETSY front page again!

Etsy Front Page.....the way it works is this.

Members (both buyers and shop owners) of Etsy choose items that they like and create a "treasury" page which is an art form in itself. A theme and a (hopefully*) beautiful arrangement of the artworks..... its sort of like arranging a gallery show. consideration is given to color, content and emotional relationships. 1000s of treasuries are created every day.

Then the administrators of etsy choose from these 1000s of treasuries one each hour to use as the "Front Page" of etsy. it is viewed by people all over the world.

It feels really special that the Blue Mare made it there twice in the past three weeks. wow!

*i say "hopefully" because i've made a few treasuries and it is a craft i still have lots to learn about.

.........new owls are coming into being.........this is how they look when they are just formed and are still wet clay. they dry for a week or two sometimes three, and then get their first firing. glaze colors are applied which takes longer than the forming process and then they are fired at least once more, sometimes several more times to get the colors just right.

sometimes i look at my work and wonder where did this come from?......i see so much in the piece all along in the process of its creation but the final piece sometimes just speaks to me in that particular moment so powerfully ....giving me love, giving me the healing memory that my heart was wanting right then....a circle....coming from my spirit to to my spirit....timeless.....i feel so touched by that experience....so grateful to BE.

there is a beautiful purple sunset on this owl...see it? just under the neck? if you enlarge it you may see the black birds flying thru that sunset....i didn't see that until just now....this thing that some call "art" is magic...i call it mystery dreaming...something that comes through me when allow myself to BE in the Mystery unfolding....

a few pictures from the pit firing of green ware that we did this past sunday. sawdust, small sticks and newspaper which is started by a hot teepee fire on top which burned for about an hour to make some hot coals. then everything is covered with a piece of metal roofing with dirt on top of that for insulation. it burned overnight. grandfather fire gave us successfully fired clay pieces, no breakage. wow!

Clay has memories, ancient memories...humans have been creating art from clay since the beginning...memories emerge when humans touch the wet earth...it speaks its memories, it speaks of its sacredness and we humans listen. 100 owls and other beings coming into being...they are in the drying stage, some are getting terra sigillata, then going into the first firing.

maybe you are wondering what is terra sigillata????? well, its an ancient technique for finishing clay.... a very very fine clay slip or liquid clay. color can be added. It is brushed onto the clay piece, then burnished for a sheen. i will be offering a very inexpensive online class in this technique soon. are there other clay techniques you are curious about? let me know!

Snowed in again. i learn so much from the challenges....i am grateful for all the opportunities to choose my heart; sometimes to take my energy back from where my ego runs away with it. this is a picture of my truck which i drove to one of the fords. good thing i know where the road is because you sure couldn't see any trace of it under the snow! driving in snow is one of the new skills i'm practicing. i'm a southerner, never saw so much snow in all of my life before this year and last! never had to drive in it! how to get about in a world that seems to full of surprises these days is the challenge on every level! when the truck slide sideways even just a little, my ego freaks "ooooo something is BAD WRONG" and my Spirit says "oh stop it ego, following my heart i can get out there and learn how"

big chunks of ice are floating by really fast this morning as the snow melting fills the river. the party has begun......there has been this ice extending out from the shore all along the river. driving across the ford on that much ice???? not feeling it to be something i want to do. so seeing these big chunks floating by, some of them 15' x 10' is pretty wonderful....i will drive out tomorrow : )

I saw the eagle again just now. WOW. He flew upstream then circled around and flew right back at me, maybe to get a good look at this one who disturbed his lunch again! Its been several weeks since I saw him the first time, is he living here? I remember now what it is I’m doing living here in this remote place where I’ve been snowed in since Sunday, and its going to rain and, who knows when I’ll be able to get back across the river….that nagging ego voice is silenced! I surrender with gratitude to the beauty of this life.

what a beautiful day..i went down to the river with 5 new owls to photograph for my etsy shop. what fun! i was chuckling to myself seeing these sweet owls looking so at home standing on a round river rock or perched on a tree branch...that really would have been enough to make me happy but then on the way back to the house i saw an eagle!!!!! wow! he was standing by the river hunting his lunch when he heard me and flew up spreading out those big black wings and fanning out those bright white tail feathers. he flew jsut a few feet above the water going downstream... i followed praying jsut to see hima again...he landed in a tree above a special spot where i sit sometimes...he flew again back up the river out of view....then i saw him again way up high circling... i remembered my camera!!! and got one tiny shot before he disappeared!!!!

......going into the kiln today, 50 owls, birds and horses with terra sigillata. ( 50, not counting the little owls. they look kind of cute on the sofa,,,,, owl family sitting around on the sofa, eating...uh well never mind)

this is the first firing that they will get. the terra sig goes on bone dry clay, then i buff it for a slight sheen.....ooooooooo. as soon as this thunderstorm weather passes on through i'll fire it up, for a couple of days, cool for one day so by saturday they will be ready to come out and get the underglaze......and then back into the fire.....

I work with clay, fire and dreams. for me, artwork is the practice of perceiving the sacred in the moment..
.....and honoring that truth... bringing sacred dreams from the mystery into the literal world.

......using clay and my hands i bring into form the dreams in my heart...holding my attention on that dream, i work with the clay, co-creating with the clay....watching and assisting the artwork as it emerges from the MYSTERY into being...this feels so exciting, this is what i love, this is what i live for....i leave the marks of this exciting process visible in the clay surface.... after the first firing, i brush colorful underglazes onto the clay, emphasizing the texture and shapes. the piece is fired again at least once. underglazes while permanent have a soft look allowing the texture of the clay and the forming process to remain visible.

............this name was given to me by my spiritual teacher about 12 years ago. it is the name that describes my sacredness, my truth, my heart. we are all sacred beings. my art work is one way that i remember myself, my sacred self.
....i've been working in various mediums since i began this lifetime. encouraged by my father, a professional modern art painter and teacher, i was introduced to art processes at an early age. over the years, a few of the mediums i've worked in are graphic design, photography, silk screening, drawing and painting. artwork is an essential part of my life. i'm grateful now to be working with clay. i've been making and selling my clay creations for 20 years.

Before moving to Asheville in 2007, i lived full time for 2 years in the wilderness in the Nantahala National Forest where i forded a river to get home. my neighbors being trees, owls, bears, stars and the dream of love and power. Now I spend about half my time there being nurtured and inspired by that sweet sweet land and the other half of my time being with the amazing, creative and inspiring two legged humans who call Asheville home.

put the truck in 4WD, say a little respectful prayer for permission to the river and drive on across the river, the Nantahala River, to my home on the other side. today its not raining and there hasn't been much rain for several weeks so the river is very very low. an easy crossing today.

sometimes the river is too high, just have to wait for the water to come back down. relationship. those are the days that i am "waterbound - way down in North Carolina".

There is this thing about ETSY.com that i really find very exciting. I see on ETSY the potential for a revolution in the art world that i feel is coming. Creativity comes in so many forms, is ordinary, amazing, common, beautiful and is human nature. One can see on Etsy examples of the wonderful variety of forms in which creativity emerges.

There is a playfulness to the energy that emerges when the old constraints* fall away. Creativity is FREE to be and to become and to come through anyone and everyone who chooses to open themselves to the flow of creative energy. Creativity is happening all the time, everywhere.

It is sacred, is energy and a process available to anyone to witness and/or to participate.

People are able to stand in the energy of something freshly created and feel that energy and do not require any background to assist them in their own direct experience of that creative experience.

* the old constraints - judgment ("good art" "not good enough art"), hierarchy of mediums ("fine art" vs "craft", etc.), past achievements bias ( education, degrees, shows, and various other sanctions by experts), gender bias, competitor abilities (awards) and all the other ways that the ego based, fear and pain world muddles in the creative energy of the sacred becoming.

I feel the energy of this special place (Rainbow Springs) touching me, supporting me as i embrace all of me. especially the wonderful deep dark rich shadows.....owls are so good at seeing, feeling, deftly unraveling deep dark power of shadows.

shamanic art thoughts..........

when i sit by the river here i feel the energy of this Beauty place so strongly. i know that this place and i are in relationship. it is a love relationship.....and something is growing from this connection......i'm being taught things.........i'm being taught about beauty... what is it about this place that is so beautiful ? when i look at the river bank i see beauty, the perfect arrangement of colors and shapes, the sounds and smells, all are perfect and beautiful. what i sense and call beauty is my awareness of the relationships of all the beings here living in balance with each other. the moss on the river bank feeds the grass, the grass feeds the dragonflys dancing with each other, the river flows laughing by and i am blessed to sit here among them feeling this peaceful beauty. this kind of beauty/order comes from being in relationship, living with integrity. its not something imposed upon the group by some "higher" being in charge and enforced by rule and punishment. its a more powerful and softer way of creating order. it is LOVE. it is the Dream of Love and the interconnectedness that Beauty beings know and respond to. It is natural. It is NATURE. It is Beauty. I love sitting here where the Natural workings of the Dream of Love are so obvious and undeniable. I am learning how to be and being lead along gently, softly held in Beauty. I am Dreaming Love into Being.

i've been snow bound off and on since jan 29th. so i've set up a work space at home. it's been really nice working here by the wood stove ......

we've had a lot of snow here this winter and more is coming. i've been snowed in a LOT.

this is bringing up things for me to look at..breaking out of old patterns. It feels like a big opening up, a big healing event. everyday i go outside and take in the energy of Grandfather Sun, the standing tall ones (trees) and Mother Earth, Father Sky...can i drive down this mountain? connecting, talking, building relationship, love... my artwork is more and more an expression of that...what i've wanted all along. i will dance with them when the spring comes for sure.

100 horse journey: notes on the first glaze firings

results are very interesting..i did 2 glaze firings.

first a cone 6 firing of red stone clay with terra sigillata, under glaze pencils and chalks.

the colors look very muted, colors burn out at cone 6. nice in a muted kind of way. and the clay has a soft smooth look. and it clinks like porcelain, nice. i want to fire these to cone o2. and see if the colors hold.

2nd firing: cone 04 raku clay. really nice results. colors are true and beautiful. i can see all the details of my work with underglaze pencils. no chalks on this group. the cobalt carbonate stain is a beautiful dark blue accenting the textures. red iron oxide is nice and rust red. terra sig looks good, too.

the first 21 horses are frolicking in the kiln for the glaze firing. i will be show them at my studio, saturday, december 12, just a couple of days from now....there are some really nice owls, too.

the intent* i hold gently is to begin creating 100 horses as sketches, ideas, a way of opening myself to the Dream of Love and to the Power of Love and create "art works" which ground that energy in the physical world**

i'm beginning with small pieces and will finish with several large pieces. this may take some "time". i'll post images and notes about my journey along the way.....

*my intent is open to responding to the energy generated and that which exists in the grid, in the Dream of Love within me and as i connect to the Dream all around me....)

** see future posts about what i mean by "art work". my definition is different from that which is used in this culture....

the horse is my power animal, thus an appropriate guide for this kind of pursuit....

…. visionary art creative process:

i journey into my energy where i connect with the Source of All Creation. I do this consciously using the drum. I journey on the sound of the drum into my energy and with intent I bring back images that are healing .... I bring the memory of my own sacredness from the Mystery into my clay creations....these art works can be mirrors reminding you of you own creativity and sacredness.

.... I bring this healing creative energy into the clay owls, horses, Jaguars, winged ones (birds) and two legged humans that I create. I work with these beings in my energy, they represent aspects of the energy of the sacred dream of love and power... within me and all around me...My art works are gifts from the Great Mystery, the energetic Source of Creation...

.......the physical process:

using clay and my hands i bring into form my heart dreams...i work with clay, co-creating with the Earth....watching the piece come into being...this feels magical....i leave the marks of this exciting process visible in the texture of the surface of the artwork.... I layer into the surface colorful under glazes, terra sigillata or slip. the piece is fired several times. these colorful finishes while permanent have a soft look allowing the texture of the clay and the forming process to remain visible.

…Blue Fire……this name was given to me by my spiritual teacher about 12 years ago. when I say this name i remember myself, my sacredness, my truth.

Inspired by ancient sacred warrior masks of

Teotihuacan. This is made from clay which is still drying. I will finish it with terra sigillata and underglazes in a couple of weeks. I am remembering (finding in my present energy)teaching sacred art in past lifetimes........my heart supported by the Dream of Love is bringing me home to teaching this now. /with my Spirit eyes looking right back at me, my ego can not deny my truth.

The Studio Stroll was very interesting. I learned two things about my artwork:
First that people could sense the energy in my work especially when they held it in their hands.
Secondly, people want me to teach what i do.
So, I'm going to teach a class using journey work to create healing energetic clay forms.

this beautiful river is usually crystal clear, but today it is red and full of floating branches, big pieces of trees, and moving so fast, big swirls of intense water...... wilderness energy swirling around and through me. pilamaya.

yep, the sacred "long one" is flooding....6 feet and still rising. the mother was so very dry, so this heavy rain is running over her and off very quickly and into the streams and the river. a cleansing for the river and a long deep drink for the hemlocks and all the standing tall ones. the road that i will drive out on is on the right side of this picture, under the water!

A walk in beauty...

Hiking along the Blue Ridge Parkway today on a section that is closed for repair, no two legged humans but me....lots of butterflies, one of them flying ahead of me, leading the way....at one point i happened to look over my shoulder and there was a large black bear walking behind me about 100 feet. WOW!

A little farther on, two wild turkeys cross the road. Yarrow, bee balm, clouds playing in and out of each other. A walk in beauty....

Coil building

I have discovered that I love coil building!!! So intuitive, and strong. It feels alive. In the past, i've built large sculptures using slabs and armatures. When i build with slabs, first i plan out in advance the piece, draw a full sized sketch and then build the armature. This determines the finished shape of the piece.

But when I am building with coils, the shape can evolve and change as the clay and I participate in bringing the clay being into form. This works so much better for me. No armature, no sketch, just clay and so much fun!!!!!!!!!
